Hi TLG readers,
People assume that staying on top of my game as a pro-volleyballer for 10+ years means I've got some elaborate recovery protocol going. With 3 kids and a busier life than ever, my recovery routine looks different than it did a decade ago. |

I don’t have 3 hours to spend after every training session or game. Once every few weeks I may get a sports massage to flush out my legs, and I do an ice bath after in-season training when I can.
What's left are the two foundational daily things that make a greater impact for this stage of my life: sleep and hydration.
- Once my kids go down around 7:30, that time is mine, and I protect it. Phone down, maybe a bath, maybe a book—whatever gets me out of whatever the day was and helps me wind down. Poor sleep is linked to greater risk of injury in athletes, not to mention worse physical and mental performance, so this is something I always prioritize.¹
- Hydration sounds so simple but I can’t ignore it. I truly notice a difference in my recovery and energy when I’m not drinking a gallon of water a day and taking my electrolytes, and this makes sense since our muscles, heart, brain and lungs all function more efficiently when we are hydrated.²
For me, recovery has become more about controlling the controllables. It's not always perfect and it doesn't always look the same, but it keeps me grounded and performing at the level I need. —Juliann Faucette, professional volleyball player Watch Juliann’s new video for mindbodygreen—then send it to every strong woman you know.
