Beauty Breakdown Logo

Hi there!

I’m Sela, the assistant health editor here at mindbodygreen, and I’m so excited to be writing this edition of Beauty Breakdown. As someone with super sensitive skin and chronic eczema, I can’t always use the trendy products that my friends love. That’s why I love diving into the science behind skincare, which I’m excited to do with all of you.

Today, I’m sharing a fruit extract showing promise for bouncier skin, rounding up tips to prevent cold-weather dryness, and debunking a common myth about eczema. Enjoy!

This fruit extract can firm your skin from the inside out

If your skin seems to bounce back a little slower than it used to, you are sure to have heard of collagen. But new research points to less obvious players in skin firmness: pomegranates and the microbes living in your digestive tract.¹

Researchers tested what happened when women ages 30 to 65 took one capsule a day of a pomegranate extract called Pomanox (either 367 mg or 700 mg) or a placebo for 12 weeks. Here’s what they found.

  • Skin firmness rose in both groups taking pomegranate extract by week 12, and the higher dose showed gains as early as week four.
  • Moisture held steady in the group taking 367mg of the pomegranate supplement, whereas the placebo group saw a dip.
  • Positive bacteria increased on the skin and in the gut.

This was a small trial which limits the current applicability of this research, but the results add weight to the idea that skin health is shaped, at least in part, from the inside out. For now, this is a reminder that gut inflammation and gut bacteria are worth paying attention to in the broader picture of skin health.

A toothbrush that treats gum inflammation

A toothbrush that treats gum inflammation

Your oral health isn’t just about a glowing smile. The oral microbiome is linked to Alzheimer’s disease,² cardiovascular health,³ and even rheumatoid arthritis.⁴

Supporting oral health is simple: brush, floss, limit sugar, and nasal breathe. But new tech is climbing its way onto the list: red light.

We’re still in the early ages of red light for oral care—but here’s what we know.

  • Red light reduces inflammation & oxidative stress
  • Using red light during orthodontic treatments sped up teeth movement & reduced gum inflammation⁵
  • Blue and red light could inactivate bacteria that lead to oral disease⁶

BON CHARGE’s red light toothbrush offers the best of both worlds. Its powerful sonic vibrations rival those of high-end brands—but each pass delivers red and near-infrared light.

Tester take: “My smile looks brighter, and I’ve noticed any pesky inflammation around my back molars has all but disappeared.”

Skincare, debunked

Myth: Antihistamines will help clear up eczema.

Intuitively, it makes sense. Histamine causes itching, so antihistamines, like Benadryl, Claritin, or Zyrtec, should help with eczema itch. Except, according to a sweeping analysis, they probably don't.⁷

The review found that antihistamines showed no clinically meaningful improvements in itch severity, sleep quality, or flare frequency compared to placebo or other treatments.

This might be discouraging, but if you’re struggling with eczema, there are lots of other options to try. Your dermatologist can prescribe you topical corticosteroids, topical calcineurin inhibitors, or even an injectable medication. Some people can also manage eczema with over the counter cortisone cream and frequent application of fragrance-free moisturizer.
